Grid-Based Games
Grid-Based Games are a genre of computer games that rely on a game board divided into cells or grids. The map is essentially outlined by invisible grid lines, meaning the space is split into cells, and you move through the world from one cell to another. This classic approach helps structure the environment more clearly and takes players back to the early days of computer games, when many games featured grid-based movement.
The advantages of this map model are the grid structure, where the game field is divided into cells, making navigation and understanding the game world easier. Games with grid-based movement often require strategic thinking and planning, as each action must be carefully considered to achieve goals. Moving just one cell might feel like making several steps in space. Many grid-based games include puzzles and mazes that players must solve to progress and reach new levels. While strategic planning and turn-based gameplay are key elements in grid-based games, this genre includes various subgenres, including role-playing games, adventures, strategy games, and even puzzles.
